Privacy Policy
Turn-In BBQ for iPhone and iPad, by Warped Technologies LLC. Effective 17 October 2026.
- Your team's plans, notes, voice recordings, photos and scores stay on your phones and in iCloud, shared only with the teammates you invite. We can't see them.
- Voice notes are turned into text on your phone. The recording never leaves your team.
- For a subscribed team, the smart features send what they need to our own server: the words of a note, or a photo of a recipe or a score sheet. Our server has it read by Claude Haiku (made by Anthropic) and then drops it. Photos are never kept and never logged.
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics or advertising SDKs, and we never sell or share your data. No account of ours: you use your Apple account.
Who we are
Turn-In BBQ (the "app") is made by Warped Technologies LLC ("we", "us"). For anything about privacy, write to admin@warpedtechnologies.io.
What stays on your phone
- Your team's records: teams, people and their roles, pits, programs and their versions, contests, plans, cook logs, notes, photos, scores, standings and money. They are stored in the app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Voice notes: when you hold the record button (or ask Siri to take a note), the recording is kept with the note and written down by your device's own speech recognition, on the device. The recording is never sent to us.
- On-device intelligence: reading the text in a photo (Apple's Vision), tidying a note when you're offline or not subscribed (Apple's on-device model, on devices with Apple Intelligence) and the keyword rules all run on your device.
- Photos you take of steps and turn-in boxes stay in your team's cook log. The app saves one to your photo library only when you ask (iOS asks for permission first) and never reads your library: picking a photo goes through iOS's own picker, which gives the app only the photos you chose.
- Thermometers: if you connect a FireBoard, the app talks to FireBoard directly with your own FireBoard login. Your password goes only to FireBoard; the token it returns is kept in your device's Keychain. None of it passes through us.
- Location: the app never asks for your phone's location. It uses the contest location you type.
Team sync: iCloud
When iCloud is on, each team's records, photos and voice recordings sync through Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) to your own devices. A team lives in its captain's private iCloud database; when the captain invites teammates, Apple's sharing shares that team, and only that team, with them. We have no access to any of it. Apple's privacy policy covers iCloud. The free-contest count (which of your contests used a free slot) is kept in your iCloud key-value store and iCloud Keychain so it follows your Apple account.
What goes to our server, and why
The smart features (turning a note into filed facts, the pre-contest brief, reading a recipe or a score sheet, the post-contest review, debrief and follow-up) run on our own server, at turnin-api.warpedtechnologies.io, and only for teams with a subscription. Free teams' phones never contact it. For each feature the app sends only what that feature needs:
| Feature | What is sent |
|---|---|
| A note's facts | The note's text (never the recording), the meats, pits and steps on the go at that moment, the last few notes, and the team's word list: pit names and teammates' names or nicknames as you entered them, so "Big Mike" and "Bertha" are understood. |
| The brief, the review, the debrief and the follow-up | The contest's name, date, sanctioning body and location as typed, its turn-ins, the plan and what actually happened in the cook, your scores and judges' comments, and your debrief answers. |
| Reading a recipe | The recipe's words (typed, or written down from what you said), up to 5 photos of it if you took them, and your team's meats, pits and turn-in time. |
| Reading a score sheet or a comment card | The photo and the text your phone already read from it. |
| A contest site's elevation | The site's coordinates, rounded to about 100 m, which our server looks up with the U.S. Geological Survey's public elevation service. Neither is stored or logged. |
Photos of recipes, score sheets and comment cards are made smaller on your phone first, with any location and camera details removed. Our server passes the photo to Claude to read and then drops it: photos are never stored, never logged and never used for anything else. The app says so on the screen where you take them ("Your photo is sent to our server to read it, then deleted").
Notes and other text are handled the same way: our server passes them to Claude and does not store them. The one exception is the post-contest review, debrief and follow-up, which take a few minutes: their input is held only while the job runs and erased when it ends.
Claude Haiku, by Anthropic
The reading and writing is done by Claude Haiku, an AI model made by Anthropic, PBC, which processes it for us under Anthropic's commercial terms. Anthropic does not use it to train its models. Anthropic may keep what it processes for a limited time under its own policies, for example to look into misuse; see Anthropic's privacy policy. Claude's answers are suggestions: the app checks every score with its own arithmetic, and nothing changes your programs until a person accepts it.
What our server keeps
- Your team's subscription: a random team identifier, the subscription's product, its Apple transaction number, its environment and when it expires, from the signed record Apple gives the app. Never your name, your Apple account or your payment details.
- App Attest: a public key from Apple's App Attest for each copy of the app, so our server only answers genuine copies of Turn-In BBQ.
- Usage and cost: for each request, the team identifier, which feature, the model, how much text went in and out and what it cost, so each team stays within its monthly limit. Not the content.
- The results of the post-contest review, debrief and follow-up, so your team's phones can collect them, until you ask us to delete them.
- Short-lived counters that limit how often a team can call a feature, deleted when they expire.
Our server and this website run on Cloudflare, which carries the traffic (and so sees the address your phone connects from) on our behalf. Our server's logs record which feature was called and any error, never the content of a request, and the website keeps no logs of its own and sets no cookies.
Apple services the app uses
- iCloud and CloudKit for syncing and sharing your team (above).
- WeatherKit and Apple's geocoder: to show the sky and forecast the cook, the app sends the contest site (the location you typed, or its coordinates) to Apple for its weather and severe-weather alerts.
- App Attest proves to our server that a request comes from a genuine copy of the app.
- StoreKit (In-App Purchase): Apple handles subscriptions and payment. We receive Apple's signed record of a team's subscription to unlock that team, never your payment details.
- Siri and Shortcuts, if you use them, work under Apple's own terms; what you say to Siri is handled by Apple. Alarms, notifications and Live Activities are scheduled on your device.
What we do not do
- No ads, and no advertising or analytics SDKs in the app or on this website.
- No tracking across apps or websites, and no advertising identifier.
- We never sell your data or share it with anyone for their own use.
- No cross-team comparisons: your scores and notes are never shown to other teams.
Children
Turn-In BBQ is a tool for competition barbecue teams and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us something, write to us and we will delete it.
Deleting your data
- On your phone: deleting the app deletes everything it stored on that device.
- In iCloud: on iPhone, Settings, your name, iCloud, then Manage Account Storage (or Storage), Turn-In BBQ, Delete Data from iCloud. A team's data lives in its captain's iCloud; a teammate stops seeing it when they leave the share or the captain removes them.
- On our server: write to admin@warpedtechnologies.io and tell us which team. We will delete what our server holds for it (the subscription record, the usage records and any stored review, debrief or follow-up results) within 30 days. We may ask for a detail only your team would know, such as a contest's name and date, to find the right records.
- A subscription is cancelled in your iPhone's Settings, your name, Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to how it is used. Write to us and we will answer within 30 days. As described above, we hold very little, and none of it is your name or contact details unless you write to us.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and its date before the version of the app that needs the change is released.
