Turn-In BBQ for iPhone and iPad, by Warped Technologies LLC.
Questions, bugs or ideas? Write to admin@warpedtechnologies.io. Tell us your iPhone or iPad model, its iOS version, and what you were doing when it went wrong (a screenshot helps). We usually answer within a couple of days, and faster on a contest weekend.
Sync
How does my team stay in sync?
Through Apple's iCloud. Each team lives in its captain's iCloud and syncs to every phone and iPad on the team, usually within seconds. There is no account of ours to make: be signed in to iCloud in Settings, with iCloud allowed for Turn-In BBQ.
We have no signal at the contest. Does it still work?
Yes. The plan, Cook Day, alarms, timers and notes all work on the phone without a connection, and sync catches up when there's signal. Smart notes fall back to sorting on the phone (on iPhone 15 Pro or later) or by keywords until then.
Two of us changed the same thing. Whose wins?
The later change. Program changes are never overwritten silently: each saved change is a new version you can compare and bring back from the program's history.
A teammate's phone doesn't show the team.
Check that they opened the invite on the phone that has the app, are signed in to iCloud, and have the latest version. If it still doesn't appear, the captain can send a new invite from Team & settings.
Teams and roles
How do I invite teammates?
On the Team plan, open Team & settings and tap Invite a teammate. Apple's sharing screen sends a link by Messages, Mail or anything else; your teammate taps it and the team appears in their app. Up to 6 people in all, and they join free. The captain can remove someone from the same sharing screen.
What can each role do?
The captain (who made the team) sets everyone's role and invites people. The captain and the pitmaster edit programs directly and approve proposed changes. A member records notes, logs temperatures, marks steps and enters scores; a member's program edits become proposals for the captain or pitmaster to add, try as an experiment or just log.
Can I be on more than one team?
Yes. Each team keeps its own contests, notes, programs and subscription, and the team picker at the top of each tab switches between them. Nothing is ever mixed across teams.
Sanctioning bodies
Which bodies does Turn-In BBQ know?
KCBS (Master Series and Backyard), CBA (Champions Barbeque Alliance), IBCA, MBN (Memphis Barbecue Network) and SCA (steak). Each comes with its categories, usual turn-in times and window, scoring (weights, scale, the dropped score, tie-breaks) and a box and garnish checklist that cites its rule. Tick the bodies your team cooks under in Team & settings; each contest picks its own, so one team can cook KCBS one weekend and CBA the next.
The organiser changed our turn-in times.
Edit the turn-in on the contest and every step tied to it moves with it. Windows differ by body (for example, KCBS has no tolerance outside its window), and some are set at the cooks' meeting: you can override the window for a contest. Your contest's packet and cooks' meeting always win over the presets.
Imports
How do I import a score sheet?
After the awards, open the contest and tap Add the results photo, then photograph the tally sheet, the overall standings or a comment card, flat and in good light. Turn-In reads it, checks every number with the body's arithmetic, and highlights anything that doesn't add up so you can fix it before saving. Reading photos is part of Solo and Team; you can always type the scores in instead.
Can I bring in my own recipe or program?
Yes: on a program, tap Paste, say or photograph your recipe (or Put in your own recipe when you start one). Type it, say it, or take up to 5 photos of the page, handwriting included. Turn-In turns it into steps timed from the turn-in, asks at most 5 questions about anything it had to guess, and shows the result in the editor with the guesses highlighted before you save. Without a subscription or a connection, it makes a rough draft on the phone with every step marked to check.
Where do the photos go?
A recipe or score-sheet photo is sent to our server to be read, then deleted: it is never stored. Photos of your steps and boxes stay in your team's cook log. See the privacy policy.
Which thermometers work?
FireBoard connects directly with your FireBoard login, and its probe temperatures feed the forecast. With any other thermometer, type the reading or just say it in a note ("brisket's at 171"): it goes into the meat's log the same way.
Siri and hands-free
What can I say?
Nothing to set up. Say "Hey Siri," then any of these (Siri asks for the rest):
| Say | It does |
|---|---|
| "What's next in Turn-In" | Reads the next turn-in and the next step |
| "Next turn-in in Turn-In" | How long until the next turn-in, and the one after |
| "Turn-In note" | Asks "What's the note?" and adds it to the team feed |
| "Turn-In pit 1 temp" (or your pit's name) | Asks for the reading and logs it on that pit |
| "Turn-In mark ribs wrapped", "Turn-In brisket on", "Turn-In chicken turned in" | Marks the step done, or logs the turn-in |
| "Turn-In push chicken back" | Asks how much ("10 minutes") and moves that meat's steps |
| "Start the timer in Turn-In" | Starts a meat's next step |
| "Turn-In debrief" | Opens the debrief and reads each question out loud |
| "Undo in Turn-In" | Puts back the last change made by voice |
| "Tell Turn-In" | Then any sentence: "pit 1 is 275", "push chicken back 10 minutes"; anything else becomes a note |
Every change is said back with "Say 'undo' in Turn-In to change it", and Siri asks first before a big move. Moving the plan from a locked phone asks for Face ID. The record button is also in Control Center and can go on the Action Button. Team & settings, Voice & Siri lists every phrase.
Subscriptions
What's free, and what does a subscription add?
Planning is always free, and your Apple account's first 2 contests with data are free across all your teams (a contest counts once a score, a note, a photo or a running timer goes in). Solo ($49.99 a year) adds unlimited contests, smart notes, the debrief, the results review and score-sheet photos read for you. Team ($79.99 a year) adds everything in Solo for up to 6 people, with everyone's phone in sync.
How do I restore my subscription on a new phone?
Sign in with the same Apple account, open Team & settings (or the subscription screen) and tap Restore purchases. A subscription belongs to the team it was bought for, and teammates on a Team plan don't need to buy anything.
I run two teams. Can I subscribe both?
Apple allows one active subscription in this group per Apple account, so the second team's subscription is bought by another teammate on their own Apple account. The app tells you when this applies.
How do I cancel, or get a refund?
Cancel in your iPhone's Settings, your name, Subscriptions, at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. If a plan ends, nothing is lost: the team's contests stay there to view.
Deleting your data
How do I delete my data?
Deleting the app removes everything on that device. To delete a team's data from iCloud: Settings, your name, iCloud, Manage Account Storage, Turn-In BBQ, Delete Data from iCloud (the team's data is in its captain's iCloud). For what our server keeps for a subscribed team (the subscription record, usage records and stored debrief results), write to admin@warpedtechnologies.io and we'll delete it within 30 days. The privacy policy has the details.
